Test for Occult (Hidden) Blood in Stool

The test for occult blood is used to detect hidden bleeding in stool. It serves as a screening test for detecting bleeding in the digestive tract, which is particularly important for the early detection of colorectal cancer. Proper patient preparation is essential for accurate test results. This preparation includes a three-day dairy diet that excludes meat, green vegetables, and fruits before providing a stool sample.

What is the Test for Occult (Hidden) Blood?

The occult blood test identifies bleeding from the digestive tract that is not visible to the naked eye. Occult bleeding is a common symptom of gastrointestinal diseases, including colorectal cancer. Therefore, this test is crucial for preventing colon cancer. Recent studies have shown that regular testing can reduce mortality from colorectal cancer.

Advances in Occult Blood Testing

Newer generations of these tests can detect hidden bleeding without the need for dietary restrictions. Testing is not recommended in cases of diarrhea, menstruation, hematuria (blood in the urine), or hemorrhoidal bleeding. It is advisable to avoid medications that could cause gastrointestinal bleeding (such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or corticosteroids) and alcohol for seven days before the test.

Indications for Occult Blood Testing

  1. Screening asymptomatic individuals: Annual occult blood testing is recommended.
  2. Testing symptomatic individuals: For patients presenting to a doctor with unexplained abdominal discomfort or anemia of unknown origin.

Sampling Instructions

Use the provided spoon to collect a stool sample from multiple areas of the stool and place it into the sterile container provided (available at the BioDiagnostica counter or purchased from a pharmacy). The sample size should be about the size of a pea. Samples can be taken the night before the planned laboratory visit but must be stored in a cool place. Samples are stable for up to seven days at temperatures between 8–30°C.

Recommendation

It is advised to analyze three consecutive stool samples.
